From Hoi An to Tuy Hoa: A Journey Along Vietnam's Working Coast
Away from the beaches and resorts of Vietnam's central coast lies a very different world. Here, fishing boats still leave before dawn, salt farmers work under the summer sun, craftspeople continue traditions passed down through generations, and entire communities remain closely connected to the sea.
This 10-day photographic journey follows the coastline south from Hoi An, taking us through a fascinating succession of fishing villages, traditional craft communities, markets and working landscapes. We'll photograph fishermen bringing in their catch at first light, explore the rivers and waterways around Hoi An, visit boatyards and fishing-net workshops, and spend time with the people who continue to make conical hats, ceramics, noodles and sedge mats by hand.
The journey is built around several exceptional photographic opportunities. In Phu Gia, we'll visit a traditional conical hat market, held only on specific days of the lunar calendar, before meeting local hat makers in their workshops. At Tuyet Diem, we'll begin work at around 3am to photograph salt workers as they harvest their fields before sunrise. And at Hon Yen, we'll head out at first light to capture sardine fishermen working offshore.
The tour culminates in Tuy Hoa, where we'll spend two days documenting a traditional whale-worshipping festival. From intimate rites and rituals to colourful processions and traditional Hát Bội performances, the festival offers a remarkable insight into the spiritual traditions of Vietnam's fishing communities and their enduring relationship with the sea.
Throughout the journey, photography is at the heart of the experience. We'll deliberately build in time to slow down, review our images and discuss our work together, while travelling at a pace that allows us to respond to the light, the people and the unexpected moments that make documentary photography so rewarding.
For photographers looking to experience a less-visited side of central Vietnam, this is a journey through the working coast—where traditional livelihoods, distinctive crafts and ancient maritime culture continue to shape everyday life.
Expectation from our Central Vietnam Tour
This tour is suitable for photographers of all experience levels, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced photographers. Our photographer-guide will be available throughout the journey to offer technical advice, help develop photographic ideas and provide feedback during regular photo review sessions.
The itinerary follows the rhythms of coastal life, so early starts are an important part of the experience. Several of our best photography opportunities take place around sunrise, when fishermen return from the sea, markets are at their busiest and the light is at its most atmospheric. The salt-making session at Tuyet Diem begins at approximately 3am.
We've deliberately built periods of downtime into the itinerary. After early-morning shoots, we'll generally return to our accommodation for brunch, relaxation and photo reviews before heading out again in the afternoon or evening. This gives you time to recharge and work on your images rather than spending every hour on the road.
Expect a moderate amount of walking on beaches, through markets, fishing villages and craft workshops. Some locations may involve sand, uneven surfaces or wet and muddy conditions, particularly around working ports and salt fields.
The tour has a strong documentary focus. Most of the people we photograph will be going about their normal working lives rather than performing for visitors. We'll take time to interact with local communities where appropriate and approach our photography with respect and curiosity.
Please note that this is a fixed-date tour. The dates have been specifically selected to coincide with the Phu Gia conical hat market and the whale-worshipping festival, both of which follow traditional calendars and cannot be experienced at any time of year.
