Tucked behind the shopfronts and busy streets is a maze of narrow lanes where generations of families have built their lives, neighbours know one another by name, and daily routines unfold just metres from the city's relentless pace.
This relaxed afternoon photo walk takes us deep into these fascinating residential neighbourhoods, exploring a side of Hanoi that few visitors ever experience. We'll wander through a labyrinth of tiny alleyways lined with ageing apartment blocks, modest family homes and small local businesses, where food vendors prepare the evening meal, barbers set up their chairs on the pavement and children play beneath a tangle of overhead wires. Around every corner, ordinary moments become compelling photographic stories.
As always, our emphasis is on people. We'll take time to slow down, observe and engage with the rhythm of everyday life, discovering hidden courtyards, old collective housing complexes and pockets of Hanoi where life continues much as it has for decades. Whether you're drawn to street photography, documentary storytelling or simply want to experience a quieter side of the capital, Life in the Lanes offers a fascinating glimpse into the soul of Hanoi.
Tour Expectations
This tour is suitable for photographers of all experience levels, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced photographers. Our photographer-guides are on hand throughout the afternoon to offer as much tuition and creative guidance as you need, whether you're refining your camera skills or developing your approach to documentary photography.
The pace is relaxed, with plenty of time to observe, compose and respond to the ever-changing scenes around us. Expect a moderate amount of walking through narrow alleyways, residential neighbourhoods and local markets, with frequent stops for photography and conversation.
Our focus is on authentic daily life rather than staged experiences. While every tour is different, you can expect opportunities to photograph local residents, traditional shopfronts, hidden courtyards, old apartment blocks and the countless small moments that give Hanoi its unique character. As always, we work respectfully within the communities we visit, ensuring our photography enhances rather than interrupts everyday life.
