Coastal Traditions
The Coastal Traditions Photography Tour explores one of the most authentic and least-visited regions of Northern Vietnam. Stretching across the coastal provinces of Thai Binh and Nam Dinh, this journey reveals a world shaped by the sea, where fishing communities, salt farmers, and traditional craft villages continue to live in close connection with nature and seasonal rhythms.
Unlike more widely visited destinations in Vietnam, this region remains largely untouched by mass tourism, offering rare opportunities for genuine cultural encounters and powerful documentary photography. From expansive coastal landscapes and tidal flats to intimate village life and working traditions, this is a journey designed for photographers seeking real stories and meaningful images.
Photography Experience
This is a small-group photography tour led by experienced photographer-guides from Vietnam In Focus. The emphasis is on storytelling, access, and working with natural light and real-world conditions.
Rather than a rigid schedule, the experience is shaped by tides, weather, seasonal activity, and photographic potential. This ensures time is spent where conditions are strongest and opportunities are most rewarding.
Photographers will be guided in composition, working with people, documentary storytelling, and building cohesive visual narratives.

Key Photography Locations & Subjects
Across the coastal region of Thai Binh and Nam Dinh, we explore a wide range of photographic environments and communities:
Infinity Beach
A vast, open coastline where fishermen cast nets across reflective sands and shellfish collectors work beneath expansive skies.
Dong Chau Clam Farms & Fishing Villages
Atmospheric tidal landscapes with stilted structures, traditional coastal livelihoods, and quiet rural communities.
Fishing Ports & Seafood Markets
Active harbours where boats return with their catch, creating dynamic scenes of trade, energy, and daily life.
Net Mending & Fish Drying Workshops
Intimate working environments offering powerful opportunities for documentary photography and environmental portraiture.
Black Incense Village
A traditional craft village where incense is still produced by hand using time-honoured methods.
Hai Ly Ruined Church (Nam Dinh)
A striking coastal landmark, shaped by time, weather, and the sea—offering powerful compositional and storytelling opportunities.
Salt Farms of Nam Dinh
Geometric salt fields where workers harvest salt using traditional techniques in highly visual landscapes of reflection and pattern.
Silk Village
A living craft village preserving the ancient process of silk production from silkworm to weaving loom.
Beyond the Coast: Ninh Binh (Optional Extension)
Depending on conditions and group interests, the journey may also include Ninh Binh, one of Vietnam’s most dramatic inland landscapes.
Here, limestone karsts rise above rice fields and winding rivers, creating a completely different photographic environment. This extension offers opportunities for landscape photography, environmental portraiture, and rural storytelling, complementing the coastal experiences of Thai Binh and Nam Dinh.
