Coastal Dreams

Vietnam's coastline stretches for more than 3,000 kilometres, shaping the lives, traditions and livelihoods of countless communities along its shores. Coastal Dreams follows one of the country's most beautiful and least explored coastal routes, revealing a world where fishing boats, salt fields, island villages and centuries-old maritime traditions continue to define everyday life.

Beginning in vibrant Ho Chi Minh City, we'll gradually make our way north, travelling by road, ferry and boat through an ever-changing landscape of mangrove forests, fishing ports, windswept beaches, volcanic headlands and tranquil bays. Along the way we'll meet the people whose lives are inseparable from the sea—fishermen hauling in their catch before dawn, salt farmers harvesting brilliant white crystals beneath the afternoon sun, artisans repairing nets, and families who have lived beside the ocean for generations.

Photography is woven into every stage of the journey. We'll capture colourful fish markets as they burst into life, develop documentary projects in traditional fishing communities, create atmospheric long-exposure seascapes and photograph dramatic coastal landscapes from both the ground and the air. Just as importantly, we'll spend time getting to know the people behind the images, allowing authentic moments to unfold naturally rather than simply passing through as visitors.

One of the highlights of the tour is the extraordinary Whale Worship Festival in the coastal town of Phuoc Hai. For centuries, local fishing communities have honoured whales as sacred protectors of those who make their living at sea. The colourful ceremonies, processions and rituals provide a fascinating insight into Vietnam's maritime heritage and an exceptional opportunity for documentary photography. Rather than standing alone, however, the festival forms part of a much broader story—one that explores the enduring relationship between Vietnam's people and the ocean.

As always, our journey extends beyond the obvious. Thanks to years of local knowledge and trusted relationships, we'll explore places that most travellers never discover, sharing meals with local communities, visiting family-run workshops and travelling at a pace that allows us to respond to the light, the weather and the unexpected moments that often produce the strongest photographs.

Designed for photographers who enjoy both people and place, Coastal Dreams offers an extraordinary blend of documentary photography, landscapes, culture and adventure. It is a journey that celebrates the traditions of Vietnam's coast while revealing the remarkable diversity of one of Southeast Asia's most captivating shorelines.

Expectations on the Coastal Dreams Photo Tour

This tour is suitable for photographers of all experience levels, from enthusiastic beginners through to experienced photographers. Whether your passion is documentary storytelling, portraiture, landscapes, drone photography or simply improving your camera skills, our photographer-guides provide as much guidance and creative support as you need throughout the journey.e

The itinerary has been designed around the rhythms of life along Vietnam's coastline. Many of our most rewarding photography sessions take place at sunrise and sunset, when fishermen head out to sea or return with their catch, markets come alive and the coastal light is at its most beautiful. During the middle of the day we'll often enjoy relaxed lunches, explore local communities, review photographs or travel to our next destination.

Expect a moderate amount of walking through fishing villages, markets, beaches, salt fields and coastal communities. Some terrain may be sandy, uneven or occasionally wet, but no strenuous trekking is required. We'll also travel by local ferries, glass-bottomed boats and other traditional forms of transport that are an enjoyable part of the experience.f

Accommodation ranges from comfortable city hotels and boutique seaside resorts to the idyllic setting of Whale Island, each chosen for its character, comfort and proximity to our photography locations.

As with every Vietnam in Focus tour, flexibility is an important part of the experience. Weather, tides, fishing activity and local events all influence life along the coast, allowing us to adapt the itinerary to make the most of the best photographic opportunities. Throughout the journey, our focus remains on creating meaningful encounters, exceptional photography and a deeper understanding of the communities whose lives continue to be shaped by the sea.
